Oh, what a difference a weekend makes.
The Tennessee women's soccer team, which went 0-2 in two SEC matches last weekend, won its second consecutive match Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 victory over Arkansas before 815 fans at Regal Stadium.
UT (5-7, 2-2 SEC) upset No. 15 LSU 2-1 Friday night.
"Things are starting to get a little bit back to normal Tennessee soccer ways, and we're excited about that," Lady Vols coach Angela Kelly said.
Lady Vols senior forward Kylee Rossi scored a goal and had an assist Sunday as UT bounced back from losses at South Carolina and Florida last weekend.
"Going 0-2 the first weekend is a bummer," Rossi said, "but getting these two wins is definitely what we needed to do, just to refocus and to get the identity back in the conference that we're here to play and we're here to stay."
The Lady Vols spent most of Sunday's game on the Arkansas side of the field and finished with 20 shots (seven on goal). The Razorbacks (9-3, 2-2) had six shots (four on goal).
At halftime, when it was a scoreless tie, the Lady Vols had 10 shots (three on goal) to zero shots for Arkansas.
"What we needed to do was really battle and fight for that first goal," Kelly said. "I think we created good opportunities in the first half and we couldn't tuck one away, and what we really, really focused on at halftime was plugging away to get that first goal as quickly as possible."
That happened a little more than 3 minutes into the second half.
Rossi dribbled on the left side of the field inside the 18-yard box, made a short pass in the box to Devon Swaim, who drilled a shot to the right past keeper Britni Williams.
"Devon did a great job that first goal," Rossi said, "and once you get that first goal, they all come."
UT's second goal came in the 62nd minute, again on a play inside the 18-yard box.
This time, Mick Imgram made a pass to Rossi, who scored from less than 10 yards out for the 2-0 lead.
"It's just finding the seams," Rossi said. "When I went in line Devon found the seam and I just slipped it to her (for the first goal). That's as easy as it makes it. Mick was in the central (zone) and she found the seam to me (for the second goal)."
Arkansas' best scoring opportunity came with about 6 minutes left when Kailey Anders got past the UT defense for a breakaway, and her shot from 15 yards was caught by keeper Jaimel Johnson, who got her third shutout.
"We always want to get shutouts for 'J' (Johnson)," Rossi said. "She's an amazing goalkeeper, so keeping it on our side, just keep pressing forward, we were unlucky not to score more than two, obviously by the shot count. Their goalie played well."
