A native of Nigeria, West Africa, Lola Alapo grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. She came to the Knoxville News Sentinel in January 2003 as a general assignment reporter. She covered police, courts, and diversity-related stories until September 2006 when she was assigned the education beat.

John Mathenge looks over papers that documents how many displaced people lived on his property, and cost of food and care for them. He lives in Molo, a large town in the Rift Valley in Kenya. His daughter, Rebecca Rukeyser, lives in Knoxville. She's started a fund for resettlement efforts in Molo.
